Durian Fruit – The Fruit Rich in Nutrients!!

The Durian (Durio zibethinus) is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio. The name "durian" is derived from the Malay-Indonesian word "duri," meaning "spike," referring to the fruit's numerous sharp spines, together with the noun-building suffix "-an."

Musang King Durian is one of the most premium and sought-after durian varieties in the world. The fruits are medium to large, averaging 2–4 kg, with an oval to slightly lopsided shape and a long stem. The thick outer shell is covered with large, widely spaced pyramidal spikes in shades of green, yellow, tan, and brown.

Musang King, often regarded as the "King of Durians," is botanically classified as Durio zibethinus. It is highly prized for its rich, creamy texture and its unique balance of sweet and subtly bitter flavours. Due to its exceptional quality, Musang King became highly popular after being promoted throughout China, creating enormous demand for its distinctive golden-yellow flesh.

MAINTENANCE OF THE PLANTATION

Once a plantation has been established, regular maintenance is essential for healthy tree growth and maximum fruit production. Protect the trees from extreme weather, insects, fungal diseases, and animals. Proper orchard management, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, and weed control, helps maintain healthy and productive trees.

FERTILIZING

Newly planted durian trees should be fertilized lightly once or twice during the first year, and thereafter 3–4 times annually. A balanced fertilizer such as 6-6-6-2 or 8-3-9-2 is commonly recommended for healthy growth and improved fruit production.

WATERING AND WEED CONTROL

Young durian trees should be watered regularly until they become fully established. During dry weather, water mature trees deeply every 1–2 weeks, or more frequently in hotter climates if necessary.

Apply mulch around the base of the tree to conserve soil moisture. Regular weeding is equally important—keep an area of at least 1.5 metres around the tree free from weeds to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

PRUNING AND SHAPE OF THE TREE

Proper pruning is an essential practice in successful durian cultivation. Formative pruning should be carried out during the first few years after planting by removing excess trunks, upright branches, water shoots, and overcrowded horizontal branches.

Allow only a single main trunk to develop. Proper pruning improves sunlight penetration, air circulation, and overall tree health while encouraging better fruit production.

PEST & DISEASE MANAGEMENT

Like all fruit trees, durian may be affected by insects and diseases depending on climate and growing conditions. Proper maintenance, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, spraying when necessary, weeding, and orchard sanitation, helps minimize most pest and disease problems and keeps the trees healthy.

HARVESTING YOUR DURIAN FRUIT

Durian fruits generally mature 125–135 days after flowering, while some varieties mature within 110–116 days after anthesis. The best eating quality is usually reached about 4 months after flowering.

Signs of maturity include dark brown spine tips, clearly visible grooves between the spines, soft and flexible fruit stalks, swollen stalk joints, and the characteristic strong aroma. Harvest the fruit by cutting the stalk with a sharp knife while it is still attached to the tree. Avoid allowing fruits to fall naturally, as this may reduce fruit quality.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Plant your durian tree where it receives full sunlight for healthy growth and maximum fruit production.

  2. Durian grows well in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter with an ideal soil pH of 5.0–6.5. Deep loamy or silty soils with good drainage are best for cultivation.

  3. For commercial orchards, a spacing of 10–12 metres between trees is generally recommended.

  4. For boundary planting or hedges, maintain a spacing of 1–1.5 metres. For exclusive plantations, a spacing of 2 m × 2 m may be adopted where appropriate.

  5. In home gardens, maintain a minimum distance of 3 metres between the durian tree and other fruit plants.

  6. 100% sunlight is ideal, although young plants can tolerate up to 50% partial shade.

  7. During dry weather, water every 2 days immediately after planting. After one month, water every 7–10 days during the first year.

  8. Avoid applying chemical fertilizers immediately after planting. If required, apply small quantities (below 100 g) only after 2–3 months, along with adequate irrigation.

  9. Do not overwater or allow standing water around the root zone, as this can damage the roots and lead to poor plant growth.

Ideal for: Home Gardens, Tropical Orchards, Exotic Fruit Collections, Premium Fruit Farming, and Commercial Durian Cultivation.
