Cut Nut or Pili Nut (Barringtonia edulis) belongs to the Barringtoniaceae (Lecythidaceae) family and is native to the Southwestern Pacific Islands, including Fiji and Vanuatu. This small evergreen tree is traditionally harvested from the wild for its edible seeds and various local uses.

The seeds are considered a nutritious seasonal food and are commonly sold in local markets. They can be eaten raw or cooked and have a pleasant flavor similar to raw peanuts. The tree is also valued for its attractive evergreen foliage, making it a suitable addition to tropical gardens and home landscapes.

Traditionally, the bark has been used in local herbal practices for treating stomach ailments. However, some traditional medicinal uses—including claims related to abortion or sterility—are not scientifically established and should not be considered safe or used without medical guidance.

GROWING CONDITIONS

Cut Nut grows well in light (sandy), medium (loamy), and heavy (clay) soils. It adapts to a wide range of soil pH, including acidic, neutral, and alkaline soils, and can even tolerate slightly saline conditions.

The tree grows well in full sun to partial shade (light woodland) and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. It is also tolerant of maritime exposure, making it an excellent choice for tropical coastal regions.
