Member of the Palm Tree Family (Arecaceae) and the Only Living Species of the Genus Cocos!

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is the fruit of the coconut palm tree. Its trunk is one to two feet in diameter and has no branches, but carries a crown of leaves about 70 to 100 feet above the ground. The leaves are feather-like with many segments and are usually 10 to 20 feet long. The coconut fruits hang at the base of the leaves in clusters of about 10 to 15. Several clusters ripen throughout the year. A healthy tree may produce up to 200 coconuts annually, although the average yield is around 40 fruits per year. Coconut palms grow naturally along tropical seacoasts and are widely cultivated in warm, humid, frost-free climates. They are abundant throughout Southeast Asian countries.

FERTILIZING

Coconut palms grow well in a variety of soils as long as they are well-drained. They require an average temperature of 72°F (22°C) and annual rainfall of 30–50 inches (76–127 cm). Fertilization is often necessary, especially in home landscapes. Coconut palms are prone to nitrogen deficiency, which is characterized by yellowing of the oldest leaves throughout the canopy. They are also susceptible to potassium deficiency, which appears as necrotic spotting on older leaves and gradually affects the leaflet tips and, in severe cases, the trunk. Sulfur-coated potassium sulfate can be broadcast under the canopy at the rate of 1.5 lbs per 100 square feet (0.68 kg per 9.3 m²) of canopy area four times a year to help prevent nutrient deficiencies.

IRRIGATION OF COCONUT TREE

Soil moisture is one of the most important factors affecting coconut production, especially in regions with prolonged dry spells or irregular rainfall. During summer, irrigate the palms by watering the basin around the tree. Water requirements vary depending on soil type and climatic conditions. Generally, an adult coconut palm requires 600–800 litres of water every 4 to 7 days for healthy growth and good fruit production.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Plant coconut palms in a location that receives full sunlight throughout the day for healthy growth and maximum fruit production.

  2. Keep the soil consistently moist with warm water, but avoid overwatering or waterlogging. During winter, mist the plant regularly or provide adequate humidity if grown in containers.

  3. Coconut palms are adaptable to different soil types but perform best in well-drained sandy soil. A standard palm potting mix is suitable for container-grown plants.

  4. Feed the palm year-round with a balanced palm fertilizer or a diluted liquid fertilizer. Increase feeding during the active growing season to promote vigorous growth and healthy fruit production.
