Blackberry Jam Fruit (Randia formosa) is a rare tropical to subtropical fruit native to Central and South America, especially Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. It grows naturally in the wild but is also cultivated by local communities for its unique and delicious fruits.

This attractive evergreen shrub typically grows 4–5 feet tall when planted in the ground and 3–4 feet tall in containers. It can also be trained into a small ornamental tree, making it an excellent choice for home gardens and container cultivation.

Closely related to the gardenia, the plant produces beautiful star-shaped, tubular white flowers measuring 1.5–2 inches across. The highly fragrant blooms attract nocturnal moths and add ornamental value to the plant.

The olive-shaped yellow fruits are about 1 inch long with a hard, woody shell resembling small loquats. Inside, the fruit contains two seed-filled chambers packed with soft, deep purple to black pulp. The pulp has a wonderfully sweet and tangy flavor that closely resembles fresh blackberry jam, making it one of the most unique tropical fruits.

Blackberry Jam Fruit grows well in full sun or partial shade. In filtered light, the foliage remains greener and healthier. Young plants are sensitive to frost and cold winds and should be protected during cooler weather. The plant prefers acidic, well-drained soil and is generally easy to grow, making it an excellent container specimen in cooler climates where it can be moved indoors during winter.

Growing Conditions

Blackberry Jam Fruit thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. It performs best in acidic, well-drained soil and grows well in both full sun and partial shade. In regions with cold winters, it is best grown in containers so it can be protected from frost.

Plant Care

Water the plant regularly while allowing the soil to drain well between watering. Avoid waterlogging, as excessive moisture can damage the roots. Young plants should be protected from frost and strong cold winds until they become well established.

Harvesting

Harvest the fruits once they turn yellow and reach full maturity. Crack open the hard shell to enjoy the soft, sweet, black pulp inside, which is best eaten fresh.
