Apricot (Seedling) Fruit Plant

Apricot is a stone fruit belonging to the Rosaceae family and is closely related to peaches, plums, almonds, and cherries. It is widely cultivated in temperate regions around the world, especially in Mediterranean climates. The fruit is commonly consumed fresh, dried, or cooked, and is also used in jams, preserves, and liqueur flavoring. It is naturally rich in vitamin A and contains a high level of natural sugars. Dried apricots are particularly valued for their iron content.

Apricot trees are small and spreading in growth habit, with broadly ovate bright green leaves that are held upright on the branches. The flowers are usually white, appear singly or in pairs, and are self-pollinating. The fruit is a drupe with a single large flat seed (stone) inside. It is similar in appearance to a peach but typically smaller, smoother, and less hairy when ripe. The flesh ranges from yellow to deep yellow-orange depending on the variety. Some seed kernels are sweet after processing, but raw kernels can be toxic and should not be consumed.

Apricots are generally propagated through budding onto peach or apricot rootstocks. They prefer well-drained, light loamy soil and grow best in temperate conditions. While the trees can tolerate winter cold, early flowering makes them vulnerable to damage from late frosts. They are relatively drought-resistant and can live for many decades under good conditions.

Harvesting is done when the fruit fully ripens on the tree. Ripening usually occurs over a period of about three weeks depending on the variety. The fruit changes from green to yellow-orange and becomes slightly soft while still firm enough to handle. Apricots soften quickly after ripening, making careful timing important to avoid bruising and spoilage.
